Build Your Site

Step 5 - Pointing your domain

You may already have a domain name and would like to keep using it with your Digital Faith site. No problem. There are however, a number of steps you'll need to complete to get your current domain pointing at your Digital Faith account.

Here is a list of the primary steps and some resources to help you along the way. If you'd like our help pointing your domain, please complete the form below, and we'll help you work through these steps.

  • Know your registrar - You can do this by using a 'whois' service. You'll find one here: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp.

  • Know your domain owner - When you look a the results from this report check out the first section "REGISTRANT" hopefully this is you. If not you may have trouble working with your registrar to move your domain.

  • Know how to login- This is were things can get a little tricky. You'll need to know the username and password to this account. What is a registration account, GoDaddy, DomainMonger, Network Solutions; each of these may be the place where your domain is registered. You'll need to know who is yours. You may get a clue here: http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php
Enter your domain name and use the pull down menu to NAME SERVER. This may help you figure it out. If you don't know, we can help you do some research, just complete the form below and we'll get in touch with you to get started. Depending on your registrar you may be able to set up your records with this information.

Because the Digital Faith system uses complex fault tolerance, there is not a specific IP address that you can point your domain at. Often your ISP, or technical contact may ask for the site IP address. There is not one.

Using HTTP REDIRECT or WEB FORWARDING
These two terms refer to the same thing. Depending on who you are talking to they may use either term. You will want to create one of these records in your domain name server records. Every domain registrar does things a little different, so you will want to speak with them directly if your not sure how to set these records yourself.

Pointing your domain to the right place
You will want to create one record that points to your full Digital Faith URL. For example, if you can see your Digital Faith website at: http://support.digitalfaith.org you would use this full URL as the destination of your web forwarding or http redirection record.
